The logbook lay open on the chart table, and Nell had been looking at the same wrong figure for ten minutes. She had written 0300 where the lamp had been trimmed at 0200, a small slip in blue biro, the kind that would pass unnoticed by anyone who did not read every line. The wind pushed at the shutters. Outside, the sea was the colour of wet slate, and the lamp turned above her with its patient clockwork sigh.

Her father had kept this station for thirty-one years before his knees gave up, and he had taught her that a logbook was a promise to people you would never meet. When she came down from the lamp room she half expected him to be standing in the doorway, but there was only the radio crackling on its shelf. She sat with the pen and considered tearing the page out. It would be tidy. It would also leave a gap where the truth ought to be, and a gap was the sort of thing an inspector from the mainland sniffed out at once.
At dusk the Mary Ellen came round the point, low in the water with a late catch, and her skipper's voice came over the channel. He wanted to know whether the light had held steady through the squall. Nell pressed the handset and said yes, it had held, and then, because the words were already in her mouth, she told him she had made a mistake in the book and it was her fault. He laughed, a warm sound through the static. Better an oops than a what if, he said, and she did not ask where he had picked that up.
Back in the tower she drew one neat line through the wrong hour, initialled it, and wrote beside it in small capitals: CORRECTED. The lamp went on turning, and for once the ink in the margin looked honest.
