Witch on a crescent moon with black cat
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A witch in a pointed hat sits on a rainbow-shaded crescent moon, with a black cat at her side, teal clouds and small stars around her. Bold black outlines and solid fills in red, yellow, orange and teal give a classic flash look, and red and white striped stockings add contrast. The words MAKE BELIEVE run in black lettering along the bottom of the design.

The snow shut the Hollin pass before four, and by six the Drover's Rest was full of people who had come in from the cold and meant to stay out of it. You are the last through the door, shaking white off your coat, and Mrs Pruett points her pipe at the only space left, a settle by the fire already occupied by a black cat that does not move when you sit down beside it.

Nobody claims the cat. Nell, the publican's girl, says it arrived with the woman who took the back parlour, a Madam Ysolde who sells charms from a brass-cornered trunk and pays for her supper in buttons. Around midnight the fire sinks and the whole inn sleeps except you, and a voice comes down through the floorboards, reciting the names of the stars in the wrong order. When you climb the stairs, the window of the back room stands open, its sill powdered with snow, and the witch sits there in her pointed hat, striped stockings swinging over the drop, a crescent moon hanging behind her like a lamp someone forgot to put out.
She offers a bargain. Tell her one thing you believe with no evidence at all, and she will stop the snow. You think of a dozen sensible answers and say instead that the road will be open by morning. She laughs, a sound like a kettle coming to the boil, and the cat slips past your ankles and out into the dark.
At first light the drifts have gone and the pass is clear as glass. On the frosted window of the back room someone has drawn a crescent moon, a cat's silhouette and two words in looping capitals. The landlord, who has never read anything he did not have to, spells them out slowly and then asks where the cat went.
