Three animals in a wreath with script

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

Three animals, which appear to be a deer, a sheep and a pig, are packed into a circular frame with bold black outlines and soft shading. The script reading Friends not food arcs over the top, and a wreath of leaves and red and yellow flowers surrounds the circle. The palette is bright and saturated, with a pale blue background behind the animals and a red flower at the lower right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cattle wagon door swung open at Thornbury Junction a little after the night goods, and by the time you had your lamp lit there was a deer standing on the cinder path as if she had bought a ticket and was waiting to be called. Behind her came a grey-faced sheep with a fleece full of straw, and last of all a pig who stopped to read the timetable board with great seriousness before deciding none of the departures were for her. The drover's van had already rattled off toward the Coldharbour siding, its tail lamp shrinking down the line, and nobody else on the platform had noticed a thing.

You took them into the lost property office because it was the only room with a door that shut properly. Shelves of umbrellas, a cello in a case that no one had claimed since spring, a tin of unclaimed false teeth that you had always meant to post back. The deer ate most of a hymn sheet. The sheep settled on the cello case and seemed to think it had been put there for her. The pig leaned against your boot and breathed slowly, the way a stove does when the fire has been banked for the night.

Mrs Parr came in at six with two cups of tea and a biscuit tin, took one look, and said nothing at all. She opened the ledger, wrote under Items Unclaimed in her square hand, and then crossed out the word items and wrote something else instead. Then she poured the tea and handed you the first cup.

In the morning the 6.40 went out on time. Chalked along the bottom of the timetable board, in letters nobody ever wiped off, were the words Friends not food, and under them the ledger entry for three names you had given them, followed by Collected by: nobody, which was, you thought, exactly correct.
