Cat and woman portrait on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a grey tabby cat's head with yellow eyes and a pink nose, layered over a woman's face with a dark bob haircut, yellow eyes, red blush and a small dark lip. Bold black outlines define the forms, with solid black hair and grey shading on the cat's fur. Red, yellow and grey ink dominate the colour palette against the skin, and a blurred red neon sign and slatted blinds fill the background.

Brindle had got into the dressing room again, and when I came back from the wings she was sitting on my stool with her tail wrapped round her feet, staring into the glass the way I do before a number. Her eyes were the colour of the gas lamps in the corridor, which is why the girls called her the Lamp. I shooed her off. She went without a sound, and I thought no more of it until the stage manager asked me who had been pulling faces at the pianist during the second act.

The club on Brewer Street kept a red neon sign burning in the front window, and its light came through the venetian blinds in bars that crawled across the dressing room floor. Ruth, who sang with the trio, said the cat wanted my place. I told her cats have no use for sequins. Ruth said nobody had asked the cat what it wanted, then laughed at her own joke, which is how I knew she had been thinking about it too.
On Friday the stool was empty, and the mirror showed me a second late. I lifted my hand and the reflection lifted its hand, but the head above the shoulders was grey and striped, whiskers out, ears pricked. Below it, my own face turned up to me with the same gold eyes as the cat's. I did not scream, though I had meant to. I just sat down and waited for the glass to decide which of us it would keep.
The next night I went on at ten and sang every word of the closing number, and the house applauded a girl with a very good bob and a pair of lovely yellow eyes. Brindle was asleep on the stool when I got back. I did not move her.
