Wolf head and dreamcatcher on the side

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf's head with a dreamcatcher and hanging feathers is being tattooed on the side of a torso. The wolf is shaded in black and grey with soft gradients, while the dreamcatcher and feathers are still partly outlined and unshaded. The composition is a close, angled view that shows the tattoo machine and gloved hands at work.

The wolf came back the night after the lamb went missing, and I was the only one awake to see him sit at the edge of the orchard as if he had an appointment. My brother wanted the rifle. I wanted the hoop. Our mother had strung willow rings for every door in the house, and the one above my bed had lost two feathers to winter, so I took a switch from the woodpile and bent it round before the kettle boiled.

I sat on the orchard wall with the ring across my knees and a bag of grey goose feathers, and I talked to him the way you talk to a dog that has not decided whether to bite. I told him the sheep were not mine, that the farm belonged to people who were unkind to their hired girls, that his grandmother had once crossed this orchard and been given bread for her trouble. He listened with his ears turned to the trees. When I tied on the first feather he lay down, slowly, like a man lowering himself onto a bench with his knees gone.

I knotted the web while the sky went from ink to pewter. The threads caught the damp and held. By dawn there was a ring of cord with a hole at its heart, and on the wall beside me a grey shape pressed into the frost where he had been lying, as neat as a signature.

Tomas found the dreamcatcher hanging from the gate with three feathers still swinging. He asked where the wolf had gone. I said he had gone to sleep, that the lambs were fine, and that it was the only fair trade either of us was going to get.
