Wolf head in a triangle on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a wolf's head sits centred on the upper back, enclosed by an inverted triangle outline with short radiating lines above it. The wolf is rendered with fine linework and stippled shading around the eyes, ears and muzzle, while the triangle and lines are thin, clean strokes. The photograph is black and white, with a thin chain necklace visible at the top of the frame and the subject's head cropped out.

Sit nearer, the lamp is low and the wind is still rattling the shutters. No, leave the door a crack. My grandmother kept it open every winter for the wolf, and she was never wrong about the wolf.

Up at Vell Pass, where the frontier stone stands on its three legs, there was a customs post in my great-grandfather's day. A man named Anselm Roth ran it. He counted everything that crossed: sacks of salt, goats, the priest's brandy, and every boot print in the snow. Each winter a grey wolf came down off the ridge with one ear torn and eyes like two coins in the lantern light. The villagers said it walked the old smugglers' line, the one that runs under the triangle of stones, and that wherever it stopped, the snow would hold a faint ring of rays, like a sun drawn in frost.
Roth did not believe a word of it. One night in February he followed the animal with his ledger tucked inside his coat. The wolf moved slowly and never looked back, and it stopped at a hollow beneath the pines where a mother held two children wrapped in a single shawl. Nobody had sent them. There was no bribe and no lantern signal, only a loaf of bread left on a flat stone and the wolf sitting beside it, patient as a clock.
Roth stood there a long while. Then he closed the ledger, walked them down to the far side himself, and when he came back his pen would not write a single entry for the month. My grandmother said the page is still in the drawer. Go on, look at it. There is a wolf's paw printed in the margin, and the ink is still wet.
