Wolf head on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A wolf's head is tattooed on the forearm, facing forward with sharp ears, pale eyes and a muzzle built from angular facets. The linework is loose and sketchy, with heavy black shading across the head and fine hatching fading out toward the neck. The image is in black and grey, with a dark background and the wrist and hand in soft focus at the bottom.

Brother Anselm had left the gate bar off again, and by the time the bell for lauds rang out over the snow, the wolf was already inside the walls, standing in the kitchen garden as though someone had sent for it. You knew it by the eyes, which were the pale grey of frost on glass, and by the head itself, which seemed cut from slate, each plane of the muzzle set at its own angle, as if the animal had been assembled by a mason who distrusted curves.

Nobody else would go near it. The abbot said the creature was a question the Lord had left on the doorstep, and questions were not to be chased off with brooms. So you carried out a bowl of the thin barley soup from the refectory, set it on the flagstones, and backed away to the wall, where the cold came up through your sandals and the bell kept time for the psalms you were missing.

On the third morning the bowl was empty and a hare lay beside it, its neck neatly turned. A single black hair had caught on the latch of the gate. Brother Anselm wanted it burned, but you wound it around your finger and kept it in the pocket of your habit, where it stayed warm.

That spring, when the pass finally opened and the first carts came up with news from the valley, you walked to the gate alone. The bar was lifted and set neatly against the post, and far off on the white slope a grey shape turned once to look back at the walls before it vanished over the ridge.
