Wolf head on inner forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf's head facing the viewer, with pointed ears and a dark nose, is tattooed on the inner forearm. The image uses soft, blurred shading in greys and dark tones, giving a painterly, smudged effect, with the fur edges fading into the skin. The plain grey fabric behind the arm keeps the focus on the small design.

The snow had sealed the Ferrier Inn's door since Tuesday, and Nell had stopped marking the days on the slate behind the bar. Her father went out at dusk with the lantern to check the sheep pen. The wolf came up the lane instead, grey as the drifts, its breath hanging in the lamplight like smoke from a doused fire.

She did not open the door. She sat on the bottom stair with the bread knife across her knees and watched through the rippled glass. The animal sat in the snow below the step and looked at the house with steady eyes, as though it had been out in the weather a long time and had made its peace with it. Its fur blurred at the edges where the flakes took it, so she could not tell where the animal ended and the night began.
Her father came back near midnight with frost in his beard and no lamb. The pen had been torn open and the tracks ran up towards the high pass. 'It takes what it needs and goes,' he said, hanging his coat on the peg. When she told him about the wolf on the step, he wiped the glass with his sleeve. The step was empty, only a shallow hollow in the snow where something had lain down for a long while.
In the morning she filled a tin plate with scraps from the pot and carried it out before the bread was cut. She set it on the top step, went back in, and left the bolt drawn, the way her mother used to leave the latch for travellers. When she looked again at noon, the plate was clean and the snow was printed with long, careful prints that led away towards the pass and did not come back.
