Wolf headdress woman design sketch

Colour · Flash

A blue ballpoint sketch on cream paper shows a woman with a serious expression, wearing a wolf head headdress with its snout and fangs above her forehead. Her long braids fall forward over her shoulders, and a beaded collar with a pendant hangs at the neck. The linework is fine and hatched, with soft shading on the face and fur, and the composition is centred and cropped at the shoulders.

Dear Nell,

The wolf came off the lorry at Hexham with its jaw wired shut and a note pinned inside one ear saying DO NOT DROP. Mr Lusk had it built in Newcastle from a pelt and a bent coat hanger, and it has sat on the stall between the shooting gallery and the tea urn ever since. Nobody is allowed to touch it but Ada.

Ada wears it for the Thursday show, the one where the lamps go down and the drummer starts up, and the whole tent goes quiet the way a chapel does before the first hymn. She ties the braids off with brass ferrules so they don't snag the wire. The pendant is a stamped tin disc her grandfather cut from a cocoa tin, scratched with a broken arrow, and she won't let anyone polish it.

Last night a boy from the Co-op asked her if it was real. She told him the wolf had been a neighbour once, and that it had only lost its temper with a farmer over some sheep. He went home believing it, I think, and I didn't have the heart to correct him.

This morning I found the pelt drying on the rail with the sun coming through it, and the fur had gone the colour of wet slate. I stood there a good while with the paint tin in my hand. I'll post this from Carlisle. Come and see it before the season ends.

Love, Tom
