Wolf howling at moon with pine trees on forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf sits silhouetted against a pale moon at the bottom of the design, with its head tilted back as it howls. Tall pine trees rise above it, shaded with soft, feathered black and grey linework that fades toward the top. The photo is a two-panel view of the same forearm, with the second panel showing the tattoo from the opposite side.

You have been on the ridge since the lamps in Haldane Settlement went dark, counting the pines the way your grandmother counted sheep, one at a time so you don't lose your place. The planting crews called these trees the Ninety-Year Stand, though nobody alive had watched them grow from seed. Below you the valley is black, and the only light is the moon, low and swollen over the ridge, pale as a boiled egg.

The wolf came up the old survey road in the second week of the dry season. Nobody had seen one since the reserve was fenced, and the council logs said they were extinct, which the logs said about a lot of things. It stopped at the foot of the ridge and lifted its head. You knew what the howl would mean before it started: the pack was still out there, somewhere past the mine tailings, and it wanted an answer.
You had a radio in your coat that the council issued with a laminated card of rules. Rule four said report all sightings within the hour. You turned the dial to the night desk and held the set against your mouth. Then you did not press the key. Instead you set the radio on the rock, stood up, and pitched your own note into the cold, low and cracked, the sound you had not made since you were a girl in the bunkhouse at Carrow.
Far off, the pines took it up, or that was how it sounded, the whole stand humming in the wind. By dawn the desk had logged nothing. You filed your report anyway and wrote under the blank line: heard, answered, not reported. The moon slid behind the ridge like a coin into a pocket, and the valley was quiet enough to hear your own heart.
