Two pine trees on the ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two tall conifers, one larger and one smaller, rendered as dark silhouettes with feathered branch edges. The solid black ink has soft, uneven tones that suggest needlework rather than fine hatching. The trees sit against plain skin, with the lighter background and jeans waistband framing the design.

Dear Morag,

The men came up from Pitlochry on Tuesday with the saplings in sacks wet with sawdust, and I stood at the gate with my boots still full of bog and told them the hollow under the dyke was wrong, that the wind comes off the loch and finds everything there. They looked at me the way you looked at me when I said I would drive the van over the bridge. Then they planted where I pointed, and I was right, and I wish I had been wrong.
The big one is Dad's, the one he chose from the nursery bed with his thumb pressed into the root ball like he was testing bread. It is nearly to the eaves already. The little one is mine, though I did not plant it. I only asked for it because it was the runt, bent at the leader, and nobody else wanted it. It leans in towards the big one every time the wind swings round, as if it were looking for something it had mislaid in the grass.
Last week I climbed up with the secateurs to take the dead lower whorl off the big tree and found the small one had put out a branch right across the gap, a single arm reaching over the path, feathered out like a hand. I could not cut it. I sat in the wet for an hour with my back against the trunk, listening to the loch, and thought about how we used to fight over who got the room by the window.
Come up at Easter. Bring the boys. The little one is nearly as tall as my knee now, and I want someone to see it before the snow.
Love, Nell
