Pine tree on the back of an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, upright pine or fir tree with a thin straight trunk is tattooed on the back of a lower leg, just above the heel. The tree is drawn in black ink with short, feathered branch tiers that taper towards the top. The photo is taken from behind against a plain, warm-toned floor, with a second leg and black shoes visible in the frame.

Dear Maud,

The pine went in on Tuesday, the one Mr Ashdown brought down from the Forestry lot in a tub of wet sacking, and I have not stopped looking at it since. It is no bigger than a boot-polish tin, a single straight leader with a few tiers of needles pinched out along it like the rungs of a ladder someone meant to finish. Father says it will never take in this wind. He says that about everything I put in the garden, which is why the hydrangeas are still in their pots.
Mind, the boarders are being useful about it. Mrs Pryce from number four has taken to measuring it against her umbrella every morning, and the commercial gentleman in the back room wants to know what sort it is so he can put it on his list. I told him fir, because I was not sure, and he told me firs have their cones standing up, which I thought was rather a clever thing to know about a stranger.
Here is what I have not told anyone. The tree on the cliff path, the one the storms took in March, was the last thing Grandmother planted before she went to live with Aunt Ivy. I had thought we would lose the memory of it along with the wood. But this one has the same narrow stem, the same way of tapering so the top is only a thread, and when the sun comes low over the bay the shadow it throws across the lawn is exactly the shape of hers.
I will send a cutting of the needles if the post allows. Come at Whitsun. Bring the good secateurs, and bring your husband if he can be spared from the dairy.
Your loving sister, Edie
