The wolf came over the garden wall the week after Michaelmas, and Mrs Abernethy found it standing among her runner beans at first light. It was grey as ash and did not run when she shouted at it. It looked past her at the pines beyond the bottom field, lifted its muzzle, and let out a long note that rattled every pane in the greenhouse.

The village said the moon had gone down the well in spring and the wolf had come to fetch it back. Old Tam Pryor, who kept bees and trusted nothing with four legs, said wolves only howl at what they have lost. Mrs Abernethy had buried her husband in March and had not said his name since. That night she took the bucket to the well herself, and the water in it shone like a dinner plate.

She let the rope run and hauled it up, and the moon sat in the bucket, pale and heavy. The wolf was waiting by the gate. She carried the bucket down the path and tipped it out onto the rocks at the edge of the field, and the moon rolled loose across the stones and up into the sky, where it had always been. The wolf watched it climb. Then it lowered its head and went into the pines without a sound.

In the morning the beans were cropped to nothing, and the greenhouse glass still hummed. Mrs Abernethy did not replant them. Every full moon after that, a grey shape stood on the rocks above the bottom field with its head thrown back, singing for something that was no longer in the well, and she left the gate open for it.
