Wolf quote lettering on the side of the thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a four-line quote in a black, upright serif typeface tattooed along the outer side of a thigh. The lettering is crisp and even, with clean edges and solid black ink, and the lines are centred and staggered across the skin. A hand with red nails and a ring rests at the top of the frame against a grey fabric, and the warm, dim lighting softens the background.

The ferry was already two hours late when Mags Aldous shouted across the quay that the Skerry boat would not wait for anybody, and you were the only one still coiling rope with your gloves off. Snow had come sideways off the North Sea since dawn, filling the harbour mouth and turning the lamps at the breakwater into smudges of yellow. Nobody wanted to go out. Nobody had to. That was the trouble with Tollness: the island needed its post, its insulin and its midwife, and there were only four boats left that still knew the channel.

Your uncle used to say a single man on that water was a fool and a pair was a gamble, but three made a crew. You had three: Mags at the wheel, Tomasz who could read the ice in the lee of the rocks, and you on the bow with the lead line. The first hour was all grey noise. Spray froze on the rails in a white crust and Tomasz kept chipping at it with a mallet while the boat wallowed. Twice you lost the marker buoy and found it again only by the sound of the bell.
Near the second light the engine coughed and died, and in the quiet Mags said, quite calmly, "Well, that's the lone wolf done," and laughed until she coughed. You all went back to work. Tomasz rigged the spare jib, you bailed with the bucket, and the three of you hauled the boat onto the next swell as though it were a sledge full of coal. The island lights came up out of the dark an hour later, so faint you thought you had imagined them.
On the island slip the midwife came down the steps before the hull had settled, case in one hand and her hair full of snow. She looked at the three of you, soaked and blue around the mouth, and asked only how many had come. Mags held up three fingers, the way she used to count fish, and the woman nodded as if that were the right number.
