Woman and dove full back piece
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A large back piece shows a woman in profile with long, flowing red hair, her eyes closed, with a white dove perched near her raised hand. Swirling ornamental linework, pale clouds and a pink floral motif surround the figure, and the head is turned away from the camera. The painted shading uses rich reds, teals and blues against softer highlights, and the design fills the whole upper and mid back.

The lamps had been guttering since the second act, and Nell Garrity could smell paraffin in her own hair when she lifted her arm for the bird. Six people sat on the cracked benches of the Halloran Pavilion that Thursday in Hexham, and not one of them was looking at the dove. They were looking at the mud creeping under the canvas and the new patch in the roof that dripped onto the ring.

Marguerite had been the act for eleven years, long enough to know the cue before Nell gave it. She settled on the leather guard, pale as a folded letter, and turned her head slowly toward the lamp as if the whole tent were a painted sky she had been asked to admire. Nell kept her eyes closed. Her mother had taught her that trick: you could hold a bird steady by not looking at it at all. It was the only piece of the old show nobody had ever asked her to sell.
The manager, Dobbs, had a buyer lined up in Leeds, a man who collected white birds and paid in gold sovereigns. He had told her so twice over the tea urn. The money would clear the wagon debts and buy the horses a winter's hay. Nell said nothing, which Dobbs took for agreement. That night she unhooked the cage door and let Marguerite climb the tent pole into the rafters, where the bird had never once been allowed to go.
When the canvas came down at dawn, Marguerite was still up there, a white mark against the grey. Nell stood in the wet grass with her arm raised, the way she always did, and waited. The dove came down the long slant of morning, circled once over the wagons, and landed on her wrist as lightly as a question. Dobbs could keep his sovereigns. Nell tucked the bird inside her coat and walked on to the next town.
