Woman in profile with flowing hair and script

Fine line · Mixed · Flash

A line drawing of a woman's face in profile with her eyes closed, set against a large grey script monogram. The linework is fine and mostly unshaded, with flowing red strands for hair and black accents along the profile and head. The composition is centred on white, with the grey script and loops sitting behind the figure.

Dear Nell, The ewes came down off the top field on Tuesday, and Dad has finally stopped pretending he can lift the hay bales on his own. Tom drove the trailer to the market at Carrick and came back with a face like a wet Sunday, so I'm writing this at the kitchen table while the range ticks and the wind worries at the back bedroom window.

I've been clearing the bureau, the one Gran never let anyone open. Under the rent books there was a bundle of letters tied with black tape, and every envelope had her initials looped in grey ink, the long swooping hand she used for everything from birthday cards to the milk money. Tucked inside the last one was a curl of dark hair wound round with red wool, the same bright red she knitted our mittens from, and a pencilled note that said only: let the strands run loose, they say more than a knot does.

I read the letters by the lamp until the oil ran low. They were all written to a man called Walter who went to France and never walked back up the lane, and every one of them asked him to keep looking towards the window so she would know he was listening. I don't know yet whether that is a sad thing or a kind one, and I think Gran wanted it that way.

I've folded the bundle into a parcel with the red wool, and Tom says he'll take it to the post office before the road closes. Come up at Easter if the snow lets you. The lambs will be bawling in the shed, and you can hold the bottle for the little one with the black ear. Love, Bea.
