Woman portrait with spider and pearls sketch
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A coloured pencil drawing of a woman's head and shoulders with wavy hair, a dark spider near her hair, and a strand of pearls around her neck. The linework is bold and dark in places, with red and blue pencil used for shading and loose construction lines across the hair and background. Script lettering runs along the bottom of the design, and the drawing is set on a pale sheet.

The pearls had been pawned twice before Mabel Crouch decided to keep them, and by then the spider had already moved into the cabin of the Constance Wren. It lived above the stove, in the corner where the brass kettle hung, and its web was so fine that the morning light only found it when the damp came up off the cut. Mabel told herself it meant nothing. Her husband had said the same about the knocking under the floorboards, right up until the week he stopped answering.

The barge had belonged to Ambrose Lusk, who had hauled coal to Birmingham for forty years and come back with whatever the boatyards would give him. He left a ledger, a tin of Woodbines and a debt to a pawnbroker in Rugby, and the pearls were the collateral. When Mabel went to redeem them, the pawnbroker only smiled and asked whether she had brought the spider's share.
She did not understand him until the second night of the hard frost, when she woke at the bottom lock to find a web strung across the tiller, every thread hung with a bead of water, and one pearl caught at its centre like a fly. She lifted it free with the kettle tongs. It was warm, and it had a hairline crack that had not been there before.
In the morning she wore the strand to Rugby and laid it on the counter. The pawnbroker looked at her throat and said nothing at all. Mabel went back to the barge with Ambrose's ledger under her arm, and on the last page she found a list of names, each struck through in pencil, and at the bottom a blank line waiting for a name. She sat down at the table, took up the pencil and wrote her own, and the spider came down the stovepipe to watch her do it.
