The fountain pen had dried out by the time Auntie Bea reached the second page of her toast, so I finished the job in pencil on the back of the seating plan. Nobody minded. Bea had been reading out the family's disappointments since the soup, and the room had gone soft and sentimental the way village halls do when the tea urn is full.

Maud had found the card in her dad's Bible the week before the wedding. It was a plain white thing with a single line in his slanting hand: Someday, Mags, we'll go dancing properly, and the dots after it trailed off the edge of the card as if he had been interrupted by the kettle. He never got round to it. Maud had folded the card into quarters and asked me, of all people, to keep it in my handbag until the first dance, because she said I was the only one who wouldn't cry on it.

When the band struck up the old waltz, I fetched the card from my bag and slipped it to her under the table. She read it, laughed once through her nose, then looked at me with the face of a woman doing sums. She didn't dance with the card. She danced with her new husband's uncle, who had two left feet and a mouth full of mints, and she counted out loud the whole way round, the way her dad used to.

On the back of the seating plan, beside my pencilled toast, I wrote the date of the wedding and then, because it seemed right, three small dots.
