Pin-up woman with flag and flowers on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A traditional-style pin-up woman with curly red hair and a wide-brimmed hat stands in front of a red, blue and white star-spangled saltire flag and holds a pole. Bold black outlines frame flat areas of purple, orange and green, with orange flowers and green leaves filling the sides and a small swirl at the upper right. The tattoo is shown in full colour against a grey carpeted floor and dark chairs.

Dear Ada, the road over Cold Mile pass took us four hours in the rain, and the lorry lost a wheel on the hairpin below Stannage. Harry swore at it the whole way down, then sat on the running board eating a pork pie as if the mountain owed him money. We're pitched now in a meadow where the marigolds have gone to seed along the ditch, and the painted girl on the booth banner has been watching me all afternoon.

You'd like Mags. She took over the hat and pole act when Nell went home to Leeds, and she runs the shooting gallery with a bucket of tin ducks that she won't let the lads touch. Last night the fair committee asked her to wear the purple playsuit again for the ribbon presentation. She told them the curl in her hair cost more than their whole prize fund, and they gave her the hat instead.
This morning a boy from the village came up the lane with a broken kite and asked if the lady on the banner could mend it. Mags straightened the cane spar with her teeth, tied the string back on, and sent him off with a dried marigold tucked in the knot. I thought that was the end of it until she came round the trailer at dusk and said the pass was shut till the thaw, and that she was glad of it.
Write back care of the post office in Kettle Bridge. Tell Mum the lorry's fixed and the ducks are holding up. I've hung the banner from the awning so the smoke from our fire curls round her feet. Yours in mud and marigolds, Frankie.
