Woody from Toy Story on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A full-colour cartoon tattoo of Woody from Toy Story runs down the inside of a forearm, showing his smiling face, yellow cowboy hat, red neckerchief and sheriff badge. Smooth black outlines and soft shading give the character a clean, animated look, with yellow, tan and red ink dominating. The word Dad is written in a black script on the wrist above the figure, and the photo is taken from a close, slightly angled view of the arm.

Now sit down, the lot of you, and mind the coal dust on the bench. My grandfather swore this happened in the Gaskell pit, the year the lamps failed, and he never once told it the same way twice, so you'll forgive me if the rope is a bit longer tonight.

A lad called Tommy Flint had a cowboy doll, tin-faced and painted, with a star pinned to his chest that he'd won at the Carrow fair. Tommy was seven and the doll was called Sheriff Hollis, and the pair of them went everywhere: down the lane, into the chapel, under the kitchen table when the rent man came knocking. One Tuesday the doll slipped from his pocket at the pithead gate and went down the shaft in the cage with the afternoon shift, grinning all the way.

Nobody believed a boy could go after a doll down a mile of dark, so Tommy's father did it instead. He took a lamp, a coil of hemp, and the stubbornness of a man who had never once asked the owners for anything. Down in the galleries he found the sheriff propped against a pit prop, hat tipped back, badge catching the light like a small sun. The air was thick and the water was rising, and the old man talked to that doll the whole way up the rope, as if it were the one who needed steadying.

They came out at dawn, soot to the eyebrows. Tommy had the doll back under his arm before his dad had got his boots off, and he said, quite plainly, "You came for him." That was the only story his father ever told about the pit, and he only told it the once.
