Colour cartoon tattoo of a minion climbing out of a dirt mound beside a grey gravestone and a shovel, on a man's side above the waistband.

Minion climbing out of a grave on the side

Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon minion in blue overalls and goggles sticks out of a dirt mound with its mouth open in an alarmed expression, one hand raised. A grey gravestone and a shovel sit to the left, with small dirt marks around the base. The tattoo uses bold outlines, soft shading and mainly yellow, blue and green ink with grey for the stone, and it sits on the side of the torso.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The shovel was still warm from my hands when the mound behind the churchyard wall began to heave. I had been digging for a dropped mooring pin on the towpath, not for anything with goggles. Then a head came up through the clay, two round lenses fogged with dirt, and a mouth opened wide enough to swallow a bread roll.

"Where am I?" it said, in a voice like a kettle coming to the boil. "Is it still the one with the bananas?"

I told it the Grand Union was two hundred yards east and that it was Thursday. The stone at its feet had been raised for a lock-keeper called Albert Pyke, who once told the council he had never looked before he dug. The creature peered at the stone, then at the shovel, and for a long moment it seemed to be weighing whether to bite the handle.

I took it aboard the *Mary Ellen* because nobody else on the cut would have, and because it was raining. It sat on the roof with its overalls steaming, drinking my tea from a jam jar and asking the same question about bananas every ten minutes. By dusk the grave was filled in and the shovel was back in the churchyard where it belonged, though I had not put it there. The creature was asleep against the chimney, one gloved hand raised as if to ask for a turn at the tiller.
