The rain has got into the cardboard box under my trestle and turned the price tickets to porridge, so forgive the smudges. Stall nine on Carrowbeck market is still mine until Saturday, and Mrs Okonedo has agreed to hold the tarpaulin while I write this on the back of a feed sack.

You'd have laughed at the sheriff doll I put out this morning. A cowboy with a chipped hat and a yellow check sleeve, the pull-string gone stiff as a bootlace. A lad in a grey anorak tried to haggle him from four pounds down to two, then came back when the first proper drops hit, counting coppers out of his pocket with cold fingers. He said his granddad had the same one in a shoebox. I didn't tell him the paint on that hat is original, because I'd only have to explain how I know.

He pulled the string once, right there by the bins. The voice was thin and tinny, and it said something no sheriff ought to say in the rain, so I threw in a paper bag for free. Then he tucked the doll under his coat as if it were a kitten and walked off towards the bus shelter on Hallam Road, one hand flat on the front where he'd put it.

I'm keeping the box of spare hats aside till you're home. Ring me when the coach gets in, and bring the good umbrella, the one with the broken spoke you keep meaning to fix. Mum.
