Grumpy dwarf on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon dwarf in a red tunic with a black and gold belt stands with arms folded and a scowling expression, shown from a slight angle. Bold black outlines define the figure, with flat red, orange, green and brown fills and soft shading on the cheeks and clothing. The design fills most of the frame against a dark, glossy background.

Every morning he stood at the balcony rail with his arms folded and looked down at the car park. The children who cut through the bins were a disgrace. The pigeons were a disgrace. The man in flat nine who played the same three chords on a guitar at midnight was the worst disgrace of all, and Sid said so, often, to anyone who stopped by the lift.
One winter the lift stopped for good. A girl called Precious Ade, who was nine and carried a violin case up the stairs every Tuesday, got stuck on the ninth landing with her case and her fear. Sid heard her crying through the stairwell. He did not hurry down. He stood on the landing with his arms folded and said, "Crying is for kettles," which was what his mother used to say. Then he went to his drawer, fetched the torch, and sat with her on the cold step until her mother came up from the car park with a bag of chips and no sense at all.
The next morning he still scowled at the pigeons. But the guitar man in flat nine found a tin of clementines on his mat, and nobody ever asked who had left them.
