Word DANCE with dancer figures on wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo spells the word DANCE in capital letters, with the strokes of several letters drawn as stylised human figures in poses of movement. The linework is bold and uniform in black or dark blue-grey ink, with no shading or colour. It sits across the inner wrist against a plain skin background, photographed in a relaxed indoor setting with a brown sofa behind.

The rain had been coming down on Chalkfield Market since six, bouncing off the tarpaulins and running in threads off the fish stall's awning, and by eleven nobody was buying anything but tea. Sol Pinter sat on an upturned crate behind his shoe rack, mending a child's sandal with a bradawl and a mouthful of tacks, and watched the girl from the haberdashery come sprinting past with a carrier bag over her head.

She stopped under the arch by the gents' toilets, shook the bag off, and started doing something with her arms that looked like shaking out wet washing and then turned into something else entirely. Sol knew the move. He had seen his wife do it in the kitchen forty years ago, dancing with a tea towel over her shoulder while the kettle ticked toward the boil.
Within a minute the lad who sold phone cases had put down his stool and was copying her, badly, all elbows. Dolores with the paraffin lamps joined in with a hip roll. The rain drummed on the tarpaulins like someone tapping out a beat to keep them going, and nobody wanted to be the first to stop.
Sol pulled the last tack from his lips and set the sandal down. When the rain finally eased off at half past twelve, the stalls were steaming, the gutters were loud, and his own feet were tapping under the crate. He stood, stepped out into the puddle in his good brogues, and for once did not check whether anyone was looking.
