Dear Marion,

The Palais was packed again on Saturday, and I'm writing this on the back of a programme because Mr Creed has docked me for using the good paper. You'll want the news first. Eddie Lusk asked me to dance and I said yes before he'd finished the sentence, which was a mistake, because the band struck up a waltz and he dances like a man stamping out a fire.

Now the word. You remember the bet we made at Skegness, that whoever found a word nobody could spell got a shilling from the other? Well, I've found one, though I still can't say it properly. Danny Okafor, who works the spotlight up in the gallery, wrote it out for me on a beer mat: jì'e'toh. I asked him what it meant and he just smiled and said some words are for keeping, not for handing round the room. Then he showed me where the apostrophes go, twice, and laughed when I got them wrong both times.

I've been turning it over all week, the way you'd turn a sixpence to see if it's real. I don't think I'll ever learn to say it the way he does, all soft at the front and then a little catch. But I've decided I don't need to. I'm going to have it written out in proper ink, in a single line, so it stays put whatever dance comes next.

Write back soon and tell me whether you still owe me that shilling. Eddie is waiting at the door with his coat over his arm, so I must go.

Your sister, Rose
