Watercolour world map and compass rose on the side

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of a world map, with the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia shown in soft washes of red, orange, green, blue and purple. A black linework compass rose sits over the Eurasian landmass on the right. The colour fades softly at the edges of the continents, and the photo is taken close up against a light floral fabric.

Brother Anselm had been taught that the sea was blue, and for thirty years he had painted it that way without asking why. Then the abbot's letter came from Rome, asking for the whole known world on a single calfskin by the feast of Saint Dunstan. He spread the travellers' reports across the refectory table, pinned their corners with pewter weights, and discovered that no two men agreed on where Africa ended.

Brother Matthias, who had walked as far as Constantinople and back with a mule and a broken wrist, brought him a dish of ground madder and a stone of indigo so fine it smelled faintly of rain. Anselm let the colours run where the ink was least certain. A rose wash for the new lands in the west, green where the rivers spread wide, a bruise of violet at the southern edge where the charts gave up and some earlier hand had written only here be dragons. He did not paint the dragons. He noticed that the pigment bled softest where he knew least.

The compass rose he left until the last night. He drew its eight points freehand, the needle trembling because the scriptorium was cold and his fingers were stiff. When he sat back, the washes had sunk into the skin like weather into a hillside, and the land seemed to breathe under the black lines. Matthias came in with a candle, looked at the sheet for a long time, and said nothing at all.

'Which of these is us?' Anselm asked at last. Matthias bent over the table and laid a thumb on a wet patch of green near the centre, then lifted it quickly, afraid of smudging. 'Nowhere you can point to,' he said. 'But the needle knows which way the door is.' Anselm rolled the sheet, tied it with cord, and went out to the cloister, where the stars were already turning over the wall.
