World map globe on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small circular tattoo of a world map sits on the forearm, drawn in thin black linework with the continents shown as simple outlines. The arm rests on white bedding next to blue denim, and the tattoo is the clear focus of the frame. The design uses solid black lines with no shading or colour.

The rain had been coming down on Harrowgate market since before dawn, and by noon the awnings sagged with it. Tobias Wren had sold nothing but a bag of clothes pegs. He sat under his tarpaulin with his maps stacked in a crate, and when a girl stopped at the stall with a wet pigeon tucked under her coat, he did not look up at first.

"I want the whole world," she said. "Round, so it fits in my hand."
He laughed and told her no one sold such a thing. She pointed at a tin bowl on the shelf, the sort the fishwives used for scales, and said it would do if he cut the rim. He had a stub of pencil and a sheet of tracing paper, so he drew the continents as he remembered them from the schoolroom wall, all of them small and tidy, and rolled the paper into a ring. She paid him with a brass button and a blue stone, and went off into the grey with the pigeon.
The rain stopped in the night. Next morning she came back, dripping from a different sky, and said the sea was in the wrong place. Tobias took the ring from his pocket, looked at it for a long while, and saw that he had left out the one place that mattered. He found a dot of ink, pressed it near the rim, and wrote Harrowgate beside it in letters too small to read.
"There," she said. "Now they'll know where to find you."
