Small anchor tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand resting on a cream, fluffy blanket, with a small black anchor tattoo on the inner wrist. The anchor is drawn in thin, clean linework with no shading. The ink is black against pale skin, and the soft blanket fills the frame around the hand.

Dear Tomasz,

The rain has not let up since Tuesday, so Mrs Farrow has put the trawler charts on the back counter and we are all pretending the shop is busy. I am writing this at the till because the ink in the good pen is nearly gone, and you always said my letters looked like fence wire. Your mother asked after you again. I told her the post from Gdynia takes what it takes.
Your anchor is still on the wall behind the ropes, the one you drew on the back of an invoice the week before you signed on. I took it down this morning to dust it. The lines are so fine that the damp has got into the paper and softened the shank, but the flukes still look like they could hook a cloud. Mr Ayers from the chandlery came in for twine and stood looking at it for a full minute. He said whoever drew that had never once been seasick, and I think he meant it kindly.
Here is the news. I have agreed to take the Saturday stall under the harbour awning, the one that leaks on the left-hand side. The woman before me sold cheap shackles and nothing else, so I am bringing up the good rope and a tin of those brass cleats you liked. Bring nothing back for me except yourself and the stories you promised, the ones with the storm and the fish that would not stay dead.
Write soon. Keep the anchor pinned to the cabin wall where the damp cannot reach it.
Love, Ilse
