World map outline on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A bare arm is extended across the frame with a grey knitted sleeve at the left edge. A black outline map of the world runs across the inner upper arm, showing the continents of the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. The thin, consistent linework is set against plain pale skin and a light background, with the design centred and clearly visible.

Dear Tom, The reunion was held in the sports hall at Hollin Grove, which had shrunk since we were fourteen, or possibly we had grown. The trestle tables sagged under sausage rolls and a tray of curling sandwiches. Nobody mentioned the map, but when they let us wander back into Room 9 the wall chart was still there, its varnish gone the colour of weak tea, the pins rusting in Lagos and Jakarta where Mr Feeney had left them in 1989.

Sharon from the year above had brought photos of her daughter's wedding in Perth, and Gary kept telling anyone who'd listen that he flew charters out of Manchester now, as if the sky had been waiting for him. I stood by the window with a warm glass of Rioja and thought about double geography, when we traced the coastlines onto greaseproof paper and Feeney swore the Atlantic was widening by an inch a year. I believed him for a whole term and then stopped believing anything he said, which I suppose was the first lesson he ever taught us.
I found my own tracing in a folder at the back of the room, left in the box of old exercise books someone had dragged in from the caretaker's cupboard. The outline of Africa was there, careful and shaky, but I had drawn South America so far to the east that it looked like it was trying to leave. My name was in the corner in purple felt tip. I had thought you would be the one who went, Tom, and the one who stayed would be me, but the paper said otherwise.
I brought the tracing home folded in my handbag. This morning I flattened it on the kitchen table and covered Hollin Grove with my fingernail, which is about the size it deserved. Gary says he'll have the whole map inked somewhere he can't reach, so it can't be lost. I think that is the most Gary thing I have ever heard. Write back and tell me where Australia really is.
