World map outline on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of the world map runs across the upper arm, showing North and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The arm is photographed against a plain white wall, with the map sitting in the centre of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The Pemberton's Travelling Fair has pulled into the field behind the Co-op in Harrowgate, and Mr Okafor has finally let me paint the big board for the Wheel of the World. You will laugh, because you always said I could not draw a straight line with a ruler. Well, I have done it with one unbroken line, no lifting the brush, the way Old Tomasz taught me on the caravan roof last summer. I started at the top of the canvas with Alaska, went round Canada, then down through the Americas like a wet thread, and by the time I reached Cape Horn my wrist had gone to pins.
Mr Okafor came round with his cigar and looked at it for a long time. Then he said the Atlantic was too wide and we would have to sort it out, and I said there was no Atlantic in my drawing, only a stretch of canvas I had decided was water. He did not argue. He sent me to fetch the sign-writer's black, the good stuff from Leeds, and told me to go over every coast twice so it would hold in the rain.
Last night the rain came sideways across the field and I stood under the awning with a torch, checking the lines. Europe was holding. Africa had gone soft at the Horn, and Asia had a little bite taken out of it where the ink ran. Australia sat at the bottom like a bird that had landed wrong. I thought, this is a map nobody could use to get anywhere, and it is the only map I have ever wanted to keep.
Write back soon and tell me Mum's hip is mending. I am going to ask Mr Okafor if I can take the board with us to Cornwall, so you can see it when we come through. Love, Dot
