World map tattoo on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A person extends one arm horizontally against a plain red wall, with the hand relaxed and open. A thin black outline of a world map covers part of the upper arm, with continents drawn in simple linework and no shading. The arm fills the centre of the frame, with the torso and dark hair partly visible at the right edge, and the colour palette is dominated by the red background.

Mr Pascoe had kept the globe shop on Sea Road for forty years, and when the lease ended Ada Lowe was left with his tools, a tin of red distemper and eleven crates of charts nobody had asked for since the Falklands. She spent the first week sorting them on the shop floor in her socks, sneezing at the dust that rose from the Mercator projections. Most went to the tip. The pencilled note inside the lid of the last crate said only: Keep the Atlantic. Do not ask why.

Her neighbour Dev came in on the Thursday to borrow a stepladder and stayed to argue about whether Greenland was really that big. He ran a finger down the coast of Africa, then tapped the back wall where the paint had flaked to plaster. "You want a map up there, do it properly," he said. "Pencil first. Nobody paints a continent by eye."

So she did. For three evenings she traced the outlines onto greaseproof paper, pricked the lines with a pin, and dusted the holes with chalk until the shapes showed on the red. Each night the world grew a little more like itself and a little less like something she had bought. By Sunday the Atlantic was a pale scatter of dots between two heavy lumps of land, and she found she could not look at the gap without wanting to fill it.

Dev came back with a tin of black ink and a brush that had belonged to his grandfather. They worked until the streetlamp outside buzzed on, him on the ladder, her holding the paper steady. When he finished the last coastline she stepped back and saw that the blank water was the only part of the wall she had not claimed, and that Mr Pascoe had known it too, which was why he had written the instruction on the lid.
