White ink rose and leaves on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A raised forearm and hand show a tattoo of a large rose with layered petals and a smaller rose or bud above it, with leaf outlines extending down toward the elbow. The tattoo is done in white ink, with fine raised-looking linework and no shading, against pale skin. The image is softly focused and dimly lit, with a blurred background.

Dear Tom,

The frost came down on Tuesday and took the outer glass clean off the far house, so I have been up since four with a paraffin lamp and a bucket of warm water, trying to save what I can. You will laugh, but the only thing I cared about was the white rose on the bench by the door. Mother's cutting. Nobody else in the county has it, and nobody else would know to wrap it in sacking the way she did.

Mrs Harrow from the big house came down in her wellingtons to ask whether we would enter the Easter show. I said the white one would not be ready, and she said roses are never ready, they only arrive. I did not know what to make of that until the lamp caught the petals and I saw the whole bloom had opened in the night, thin as lace, every edge outlined in frost that had not yet melted.

I am sending you a petal in this envelope. It will be flat and a little bruised by the post, but it is the only one that opened before the thaw. Keep it somewhere dark. Mother always said white things do not like the light, they only show it.

Your brother, Walter
