White ink roses on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A forearm and wrist, with the hand raised at the top of the frame, carry a pale tattoo of a large rose with smaller roses and leaves trailing down towards the elbow. The tattoo is drawn in fine white ink outlines with little or no shading, so it is visible mainly as raised, lighter lines on the skin. The arm runs diagonally through the frame over a dark, soft-focus background with a pink fabric edge at the lower right.

Dear Marjorie, the band at the Palais has finally learned that song you hummed in the back of the bus, and I nearly walked into the bandstand when I heard it. Mr Okafor says the ballroom floor needs re-chalking before Saturday, so I've been on my knees with a tin of French chalk and a rag, and my fingers are still white to the knuckle. I think of you every time I see them.

You asked me last week whether I still had the brooch you left on the cloakroom shelf. I do. It's pinned inside my coat where the lining is torn, and I'm not going to pretend that was an accident. Ada from the ticket booth says I'm soft on a girl who only danced with me twice, and she's probably right, though the second time you stood on my foot and laughed so hard the saxophonist lost his place.
If you come Saturday, wear the grey dress with the little collar. I'll be the one by the pillar with the roses from the florist's window, pressed flat in the pages of my hymn book, though I've half a mind to give them to you outright and let the bishop say what he likes. Come early, before the lamps go down. I want to see your face when the first waltz starts and you realise I've learned to lead.
Yours, with chalk on my hands, Edward
