Yellow rose on a lower leg

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A large yellow rose seen from above fills most of the frame, with its petals curling outward from a tight centre. The petals are shaded in yellow and orange with pale highlights along the edges, giving a soft, three-dimensional effect. The tattoo sits on a lower leg against a blurred indoor background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud, the rose came through the post office in Barstow wrapped in a damp tea towel, and the clerk held it up to the light like a bad fish. I signed for it anyway. It is the yellow one from Mother's wall, the one she swore would never take from a cutting. Three inches of stem and two leaves, and the bloom no bigger than a walnut, but I know it by the way the petals curl back on themselves like the lip of a cup.

I took the wrong road out of town to get here, I'll admit that. The highway runs straight for forty miles past nothing but creosote and a water tower with its name scraped off, and a man at the diner said the old track across the dry lake would save an hour. It saved me the radiator and most of my nerve. Somewhere past the cattle grid I stopped to let the engine cool and sat on the bonnet with the sun pressing on my shoulders, and I remembered how Mother used to say a rose wants its roots in cold ground and its face in the sun.

I am writing this from the motel by the rail spur, where the sign still promises colour television. I have stood the cutting in a jam jar on the windowsill. Each morning the petals open a little further, the colour of old brass and marmalade, and the room smells faintly of rain that never falls here.

Tomorrow I will plant it in the yard behind the office, where the owner says nothing has grown since the war. He lent me his spade without asking why. If it lives, you will know by the first bloom. If it doesn't, at least I tried the road she never let us take.
