Yin yang with paw prints on the back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black circle is divided into a yin yang shape, with a paw print in white on the black half and a black paw print on the white half. The paw prints are rendered with smooth shading and soft grey edges, while the outer ring is a clean, bold line. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against lightly textured skin, with a dark vignette border around the photograph.

The gale had taken the lamp-room glass the night before, and by morning the whole of Gwithian Point smelled of salt and wet slate. Hester Vosper found the dog first, sitting on the bottom step of the stone stair with his nose to the crack under the door, as if staring at it might shift the wind. Nobody had seen the cat since the squall.

Pilot had come to the Point as a pup off a coal barge. He was black as a boot except for four white feet, and in six winters he had never once let the tabby called Sixpence sleep on the warm half of the hearthstone. Sixpence had never once let him have it. They had divided the flag between them by an agreement nobody wrote down: the dog kept the dark side nearest the range, the cat kept the pale corner by the window, and the line between them wandered a little each year, like a tide mark.
Hester took the lantern and the coil of rope, and Pilot went ahead of her, nose low, down past the boathouse to the ledge where the gulls roosted. The cat was wedged in a cleft above the high-water line, fur plastered flat, glaring at the sea as though it had insulted her personally. Pilot lay down on the rock beside her and did not move until the tide turned and Hester could reach them both.
Back in the kitchen the cat went straight to the hearth and sat, dripping, squarely on the line. The dog flopped down a hand's width away and sighed. Hester left them to it. In the morning she found two sets of prints pressed into the flour she had spilled by the door, one black with white toes and one white with black, meeting in the middle and not quite overlapping.
