Zombie hand and CREEPIN IT REAL banner
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A purple zombie hand reaches up from a green ribbon banner reading CREEPIN IT REAL, with a cream bone and a green leafy shape at the base. Bold black outlines and soft grey shading define the hand, with blue spots and dripping details. Purple, green, blue and cream inks sit on pale skin, and the design fills the centre of the frame with other tattoos at the edges.

Dear Aunt Ruth, you will not believe the week we have had up at Gallow Cross. The new vicar wanted the old lych-gate moved, so Eli dug the footings on the north side, where the drovers used to bury the ones who died on the pass. On Tuesday he struck something soft under the turf and swore at it, and then the hand came up.

It was purple, Ruth, the colour of a bruise on a plum, and freckled all over with blue like lichen on a wet gatepost. It fair dripped. It felt about the air like a man hunting for a light switch in the dark. Eli dropped the spade, and I, being the sensible one, sat down on the wall and laughed until I was sick. The hand had a strip of green ribbon knotted at the wrist, stitched with the words CREEPIN IT REAL, and beneath it was a bundle of wet laurel bound round a cream bone that I am fairly sure belonged to a horse.
Mr Fenwick from the travelling fair came up the pass on Thursday, took one look, and said the hand had been his, buried six years since after a wager at the Whitsun sideshow. He wanted it back for the act. Eli, who has a soft heart, asked what it was for. Fenwick said it was for waving at the tourists, and that a thing which wants to be seen should never be left in the ground.
So it goes to Kendal on Saturday in a hatbox with a good coat over it, and I have promised to wave back. Your loving niece, Hester.
