Black and white photo of a fine line tattoo of the numerals 18:13 on the inner forearm, with a metal wristwatch worn on the same wrist.

18:13 in fine line on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo reading 18:13 in thin, clean linework sits on the inner forearm of a person wearing a black top and dark jeans. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the numerals are slightly slanted. The plain white background and black-and-white treatment keep the focus on the arm and the tattoo.

The timetable at Thornholme had said 18:13 for forty years, and Mr Alder had never once known the Leeds train to leave on it. He kept his watch on a nail above the stove, a silver thing his father left him, running four minutes fast so he would never be caught short. That Wednesday the rain came sideways off the moor, the signal wire iced over, and he stood on the platform with a hand lamp, counting the minutes against the board.

At nine minutes past six a girl came up the steps with a cardboard suitcase tied in string. She might have been seventeen, wearing a man's oilskin that trailed at her boots, and she asked whether the train was on time. He told her it was never on time, only on its way. She laughed, a short sound the wind took off her, and sat on the bench under the lamp with a book of crossword puzzles, filling the squares in pencil while the shelter rattled around her.

The Leeds train came round the bend at 18:14, one minute late, which for Thornholme was close to a miracle. Alder reached for his ticket punch and found the bench empty. The crossword lay folded on the slats, every square filled except one clue, *the hour the trains forgot*. In the margin of the old timetable pinned to the wall, someone had written the answer in careful pencil: 18:13.

He unpinned the page and kept it in his coat. The following Wednesday he set his watch by the station clock, which he had never once done, and for the first time in forty years the two agreed.
