21st birthday quote and cocktail glass on wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A close-up of a wrist showing a text design in a typewriter-style serif font, with the words I'm With Courtney's 21st Birthday Party and If I'm Lost, Please Buy Me A Drink in dark brown. The number 21st is picked out in red, and a small red martini glass with a cherry sits to the lower right of the text. The ink is crisp and even on a pale background, with the wrist filling the frame and the hand visible at the top.

You have stamped four hundred passports since midnight, and none of them has made you laugh, so when the minibus noses up to the barrier at Kessel Bridge with its hazards blinking, you lean out of the booth expecting nothing much. The driver passes his papers through the slot with a tired shrug. Taped inside the back window, where the headlamps of the lorry behind catch it, is a card printed in a typewriter face: I'm With Courtney's 21st Birthday Party. Underneath, in smaller letters, If I'm Lost, Please Buy Me A Drink.

You count heads against the manifest. Twelve names. Eleven women, one of them snoring against a rucksack covered in sequins. "Where's the twelfth?" you ask. The driver rubs his eyes. "Courtney. She got off at the last services to find a loo. Said she'd be two minutes." Two minutes, you think, is a long time at a service station on the far side of a river.
You radio the café on the Kessel side, and a waiter called Piotr says a young woman is at the counter buying hot chocolate for a Dutch cyclist who has missed his train. She has a phone in one hand and a receipt in the other, and she has not, as far as Piotr can tell, yet found her way back to anybody who knows her name. The barrier lifts. You wave the minibus through, then walk the length of the car park yourself, torch in hand, to fetch her.
When she climbs back aboard, you hand her the passport she left on the counter, the card still tucked inside its cover. Beside her name on the manifest you stamp a small red circle and write one word beside it: found, and dry.
