The gap between platforms nine and ten was never on the timetable, which is why Mr Ashdown spent three weeks in 1951 trying to argue it into existence with chalk. He had measured the space with a surveyor's chain and found it wide enough for one carriage and a porter's barrow, so he painted a small tin sign and nailed it above the wooden gate: 9 3/4. The company wrote asking him to take it down. He sent back a drawing of the fraction bar, slanted to match the sleepers, and they never replied.

I inherited the gate and the sign when I took over lost property in the autumn. Most days the only things that come through the hatch are umbrellas and a single left glove that everyone keeps trying to claim. On Thursdays, though, a woman comes in with a battered suitcase and asks for a ticket to the gap. I have never once found it in the ledger. I tell her it is not a platform. She tells me she has been waiting at that sign since she was small enough to need help reading it.

Last month she left the suitcase with me and did not come back. Inside was a station ledger in Ashdown's hand, the margins full of sums: how many paces from nine to the gap, how many from the gap to ten, how long a train would need to hold its breath there. The final page carried one line: the 3/4 train leaves when somebody stops asking where it is going. I entered the case in the property book under Miscellaneous and dropped the hatch. The gate is still there, and the paint is bright enough that I can read it from my stool.
