Abstract black geometric shapes on a wrist

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is shown palm up, with a bold abstract tattoo on the inner wrist. The design is made of solid black bars and a blocky shape with a hollow rectangular cut-out, with ragged, painterly edges. The ink is uniformly black, set against pale skin on a light, slightly cluttered background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Okonedo's brush had gone dry twice before dinner, and Ada knew the fascia would not wait for him to find a fresh pot of enamel. The Palais at Westgate had lost its name in a gale the winter before, and the council wanted it back up by the weekend, lit, in the old black letters that had been spelled over the door since 1931. Ada had been hired to hold the ladder and mix the paint. She was not hired to paint, which was why she was doing it.

She worked the first bar on a scrap of hardboard. The trick, Okonedo told her, was to let the brush drag, so the edge broke up like a wave going out over shingle rather than sitting clean like a ruler line. Two bars, then a third, each one a little shorter than the last, stepping down the board like the stairs to the ballroom. The block he wanted under them was heavier, a slab with a square of bare board left in its middle, so that the light from the street could come through and spell out the one letter that had survived the gale, a hollow P.

On the fourth night the wind came back, and Ada climbed the ladder with the tin under one arm and the stencil in her teeth. She had cut the stencil herself from a sheet of card that smelled of the bakery downstairs. Her hands shook when she set the first stroke to the fascia, and the paint ran a little where it should have stopped. Okonedo watched from the pavement and said nothing, which she took as permission.

When the bulbs came on at dusk the bars stood out black against the cream render, ragged at the edges like something torn rather than drawn. Passers-by slowed to read the sign and then, because the hollow square caught the light, they read the shape of the building instead. Ada came down the ladder with paint to her wrists and found that she could not tell which of the marks were hers and which had been there all along.
