Two wavy lines on the inner wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of two bold, wavy black lines sits on the inner wrist, with the hand raised and fingers slightly curled. The linework is solid black with slightly uneven edges and no shading. The dark woven background contrasts with the pale skin, and the tattoo is the only ink visible.

Out past the breakwater the sea was doing what it always did at the turn of the tide, folding itself into two long lines that never quite met, one heading in and one heading out. My father showed me that on the slipway at Garvel when I was nine, before he took the job on the bridge and stopped coming home smelling of salt. He said you could tell the weather by how the lines leaned, and I believed him for about thirty years.
The owner arrived at half past two, soaked to the knees, holding a damp envelope of papers and a thermos with a dent in its side. He had been trying to get the dog across since the Thursday before. He did not ask whether his dog was in trouble. He asked whether it was allowed to come home. I stamped the pet passport with the blue crossing mark, wrote the date beside it in my neatest hand, and handed it back to him.
When the ramp went up I stood at the rail and watched the two white lines of wake spread behind the ferry, one going and one coming, and the terrier's nose pressed to the glass of the car window until the lights were too small to see.
