Stacked prism outline on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo of four hexagonal prisms stacked diagonally, each one overlapping the next, drawn as solid black outlines with no internal shading. The lines are even and crisp, and the shapes sit centrally on the inner forearm against plain, light skin. The image is a close, straight-on photo with a gloved hand and a paper towel visible at the lower left.

Gather in close under the awning, all of you, because the rain has got into my throat and I'll not shout over it. This is the tale of Orla Penhallow, who sold lamp-glass at the Tuesday market in Carrowby, back when the stalls ran down the hill like gutters.

Orla had four hexagonal prisms of glass, each one a little heavier than the last, and she stacked them on her trestle so every one leaned across the next like a staircase nobody could climb. Buyers took it for a trick with mirrors. A man in a wet waxed coat, Desmond Vane, offered her a shilling for the top piece. She said no. He told her the glass had a hairline crack. She said the crack was where the light got in, and that was why it was worth more.
That night the rain gave up, and the stack stood through it without a single tremor. At first light the sun slid under the cloud and struck the prisms, and four bright hexagons fell across the cobbles, each edge sharp as a pencilled line, every one overlapping the next. Desmond came back at dawn with two shillings in his fist. He found Orla kneeling beside the lines, tracing them with her finger, and he could not bring himself to lift the glass from the light. She never sold it. She simply went on tracing.
So mind your step on the hill. The lines are still there beneath the puddles, if the rain lets you see them.
