Piston tattoo on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a piston and connecting rod sits on the side of a finger, with another hand resting in the foreground. The piston is drawn in simple black outline with a few horizontal ring lines and a small dot on the crown, and the rod connects to a plain circular end. The image is a close, slightly soft snapshot in neutral, pale lighting.

Dear Sol,

The lift in Hawthorn House has been dead since Tuesday, so I've been taking the stairs to the eleventh with the shopping and your old toolbox, which I still haven't given back. Mrs Okafor on nine says the council will come when the thaw comes, which means never. You asked how Danny's getting on with the Vauxhall in the bays behind the bins. He's had the head off for two weeks now. Every evening he lies on a flattened cardboard box with a torch in his teeth, swearing at a bolt no bigger than a fingernail.

Last night he showed me the thing he's been carrying about in his coat pocket: a piston, cold and oily, the rings still bright where they've rubbed the bore. He turned it under the streetlight and said the whole engine is just this going up and down a hundred times a second, and the crank turns that into something that moves a car. It took me straight back to Dad's garage on Ridley Road, the way he'd hold a part up and call it the heart of the thing, then laugh at himself for being soft.

Then Danny held his finger up to the light so I could see the little piston inked on its side, a neat black outline with horizontal lines for the rings and a dot on the crown like a rivet. He did it himself in the summer with a sewing needle and Indian ink, and he says it's wonky, the rod's a touch too long. I told him it looked like the engine had decided to live on his finger and wasn't going anywhere.

He's coming for Sunday dinner if the lift's still broken. Bring the toolbox back.

Love, Priya
