Abstract flowing swirl tattoo on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of an abstract tattoo of sweeping, curved black lines that taper into a spiral and a pointed tip, resembling a feather or flame. The left panel shows it healed on the inner forearm, and the right panel shows the same design as a drawing on a white background. The linework is bold and smooth with grey shading and solid black accents on a plain background.

The wick had gone soft in its brass cup by the time Dad's boots hit the stairs, and I knew from the way he took the last three steps that the weather had turned. Out past the Scarr, the Mary Ann was still running for home with a torn jib and a boy at the helm who had never read a sea.

I had watched Dad trim a wick a thousand times. You pinch the old char away with the little tongs, you cut it square, and you never let the flame lean. He pushed the cloth into my hand and climbed up to the gallery without a word, and I heard the glass hum when the wind found the north face.

Grandad always said a flame was only a feather of gas that had learned to stand up. I thought of that as I struck the match. The first light caught and bent sideways, then straightened, curling into a tall white plume that rose through the lens like something trying to get out. I fed it slowly. Below me the harbour went from black to pewter, and beyond the breakwater a spark lifted and held.

When the Mary Ann came round the wall at four bells, her sails were grey rags and her crew were shouting. Dad came down with soot on his hands and said nothing, only filled the kettle. I kept my eye on the flame. It was the one thing in the tower that moved as though it had somewhere to be.
