Abstract orange and black tattoo on upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows an abstract, wing-like form with black linework and a long curved black line running up the arm. Its shading blends yellow, orange and red washes with the black lines, and a small arrow-like mark sits on the yellow area. The photograph is cropped below the face, with the tattooed arm in the foreground and a white rose on a stem held beside a pleated dark skirt.

The rain had come down on Harrowgate market for nine days, and the stallholders had stopped pretending it would leave. Old Tamsin Reed sold feathers under a tarpaulin at the north gate, and every morning she sat with her back to the wet and her hands in her lap, waiting for the one customer who never wanted a feather at all.

He came on the tenth day carrying a bird in a cage of reeds, though the bird was not a bird once it was out of the lamplight. It was a wing shape, black at the edges and orange where the sun had struck it, and it folded itself against the cold stone of the well. 'Mend it,' he said, and set down a coin with a small arrow stamped into its yellow face. Tamsin knew that mark. Her own father had cut it into the first bow he ever made.
She took a thread from her apron, black and wet as rope, and drew it from the wing up the length of the market to where the rain thinned. The line ran on past the gate and past the tollhouse, and the stallholders watched it climb into the grey like a kite string with nothing on the other end. 'It is not mending you need,' she told him. 'It is a direction.'
He followed the thread for three days, through puddled lanes and over the canal bridge, and on the fourth morning the rain stopped. The sun came over the hills, as yellow as the coin, and the wing lifted from his palm, orange edges open, and flew straight into the light. Tamsin never saw him again, but the market says her father's arrow still hangs above the north gate, and that on wet days it points home.
