World map outline on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of the world map sits on the side of the foot, just below the ankle. The continents are drawn in thin, even linework with no shading, showing Africa, the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia. The ink is dark and the photograph is set against a blue denim background, with a woven bracelet visible above the tattoo.

Ruth had the tracing paper pinned before the kettle boiled, and already she was cursing the Cape. Mr Oduya from the survey office wanted the new schoolroom atlas by Friday, and every coast on his list had to be drawn in one unbroken line, the way her father had taught her in the workshop above the fish market in Hull. "Lift the nib and you admit the land was cut," he used to say, tapping the glass of his magnifier. "The sea doesn't leave gaps."

She started with the Americas because they were easiest to hold in her head, a long hook of ink running down from the north, then Europe, a ragged shoulder under the Atlantic. Africa took the whole of Tuesday. The Horn kept snagging her pen, and each time she rubbed a line out the paper thinned under her fingers. By Wednesday night the line had passed Arabia, swung east over India and slid down through the islands like a bead threaded on wire.
On Thursday she reached the bottom of the sheet, where Australia sat alone. Its coast was easy, a rounded thumb of land with a bite out of the south. She drew it, felt the nib pull toward the edge of the paper, and kept going, past the margin, onto the blotter, over her pencil marks, and round the cold rim of the inkwell until the line came back to the small blot just under Africa where her first hesitation had been.
Mr Oduya found the blotter in the morning and said nothing for a long time. Then he took out a pen, lifted it, and set it down again without making a mark. He put his magnifier away and asked her to frame the blotter instead.
