World map and aeroplane on two wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown with palms facing up and red painted nails. The left wrist carries an outline of a world map in thin black linework, with continents drawn as unshaded contours. The right wrist has a small outline of an aeroplane in simple single-weight black lines.

Dear Tom, the map you posted from Lisbon arrived the same week as the plane ticket, which Mother says is the closest either of us will come to a joke about timing. I have pinned the map above the hall table at Seacrest, between the fire notice and the list of rules about baths, and the guests have taken to tracing their routes with their fingers over breakfast.

Mrs Pryce, who has kept the rooms since 1961, says the damp has got into Australia, so I have started a little ledger of where each guest has come from. Mr Abernethy from Leeds insists he has been to Peru, and Miss Dodd from the bottom room has a theory about the ink running off the coast of Greenland. I tell them the map is only as honest as the person holding the pen. You were always the one who drew the coastlines wrong on purpose.
The aeroplane is the part I keep looking at. Last Thursday a girl sat on the end of the pier with a paper cup of tea and watched a small jet bank out over the water, and she said, very quietly, that it was the only thing in Sussex that knew where it was going. I thought of your letter then, the one that said you would be gone a year and then another one, and I put the kettle on so I would not have to answer her.
The room at the top of the stairs is made up. Mrs Pryce wants it aired every Friday in case. I am writing to ask, plainly, which coastline you are standing on this week, so I can move the pin.
