The last train to Cold Harbour left at a quarter past eleven, and for a month the porter Tobias Greave had seen a white rabbit cross the platform with a pocket watch on a chain. It wore a little waistcoat and was always late, and it never once looked at the clock on the wall, which Tobias thought was the only sensible thing about it.

One night in October the rabbit stopped at the lost property hatch and knocked three times. Tobias opened it. Inside, on the shelf between an umbrella and a jar of buttons, sat a teacup with steam rising from it, though nobody had poured any tea. Beside it lay a black top hat, a heart cut from card, and a small paper girl with her hands behind her back. The rabbit asked him, very politely, whether anyone had claimed the girl. Tobias said no. The rabbit said that was a pity, because she had been waiting since the Michaelmas timetable and somebody ought to see her onto a train.

So Tobias put the paper girl in his coat, and the rabbit hopped beside him down the steps to the eleven-fifteen, and the guard blew his whistle at a quarter past exactly. The carriage doors closed. When the train pulled out the platform was empty and the hatch was shut, and on the bench where the rabbit had been sitting lay a teacup, still warm, with a note in neat capitals: THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE. Tobias kept the cup. He never found out where Cold Harbour was, but from that night he began to be early for everything.
