Colour tattoo of Alice tumbling through a purple swirl above the grinning Cheshire Cat, across an upper arm and shoulder.

Alice and the Cheshire Cat on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows Alice from Alice in Wonderland falling backwards, her blue and white dress billowing and her arms outstretched. Below her, the pink Cheshire Cat grins with yellow eyes and a red nose, its striped body partly visible. Bold outlines and smooth shading sit against a purple and orange swirling backdrop, with the figures filling the upper arm and shoulder.

The rain had found the gap in the canvas again, and it dripped steadily onto a box of chipped saucers Nell had meant to sort since Tuesday. She wiped her hands on her apron and looked at the boy hovering by the book stall, a carrier bag clutched to his chest. 'Found something for your gran?' she asked. He shook his head and held out a water-stained paperback, its spine split down the middle.

'Alice,' he said. 'The bit with the cat. Mum says it's rubbish, but I want to know if the cat's real.' Nell took it and flicked to the frontispiece, where a grin hung above the page like a thought nobody had finished. She laughed. 'Depends who you ask. My dad swore he saw one on the wall behind the bakery, grinning at him over the bins. Said it was gone before he could finish his sentence.'

The boy stared at the book as though it might fall open into somewhere else. Outside, a van reversed through the puddles, beeping, and the stallholders shouted for their tarpaulins. Nell priced the book at fifty pence, then twenty, then wrote 'free' on a card and tucked it into his bag. 'Mind you don't fall down any holes,' she said. He grinned, a gap-toothed grin, and for a moment he looked exactly like the cat.

He ran off towards the bus stop. Nell stacked the saucers and pulled the tarpaulin tight, and when she closed up the rain was still coming down. The puddle by the gate had a long, lazy curl at its edge, and she stood looking at it for longer than she meant to.
