Allons-y script above the collarbone

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a woman's neck and upper chest, with the chin cropped out of frame. A thin black script reads Allons-y, set just below the collarbone on the left side of the chest. The fine, even linework sits on pale skin against a soft grey background, with the composition kept tight on the tattoo.

Dear Edie,

The boarding house has had its last guests of the season and I am sitting in the front parlour with the lamp lit at four o'clock because the fog came in off the bay before the kettle boiled. Mr Fenwick has settled his bill in coins, every one of them counted twice, and the Pilling sisters have gone home to Leeds with their hatboxes. Your room is exactly as you left it, bar the wallpaper I stripped in April, which you will have to forgive me for doing without you.

Yesterday I found the card you pinned behind the scullery door in 1931, the one with the French you copied from that mechanic on the Calais boat. Allons-y, it says, in your slanting hand, underlined twice, as if the words were a threat to the washing up. I laughed out loud, alone in the hall, and Mrs Greaves came out thinking someone had fallen down the stairs.

I have decided to let the room go to the new lodger from Carlisle who wrote asking for a bed "near the sea but not in it". I am keeping the tide table and the brass key with the blue fob. Come home before Christmas if you can, or write and tell me where the next train goes, and I will put the kettle on for whichever of us gets there first.

Your loving sister, Maud
